Democrats have outpaced Republicans nationwide in the fundraising battle this election cycle. Even in deep-red Utah, where Trump enjoys a 15-point lead in the polls, Harris has outraised Trump 2-1.
For many Utah Democrats who feel as though their state is hopelessly Republican, campaign donations are a way to participate at a national level and feel as if they are having an impact, explained Brigham Young University political science professor David Magleby.
“They can signal support and try to make a difference through dollars,” he said. “So what this says to me is there’s enthusiasm on the part of donors for Harris more than there is enthusiasm among donors for Trump — and that’s a pretty remarkable statement.”
According to Federal Election Commission filings, Harris has raised $2.36 million in Utah since her campaign began compared to Trump’s $1.08 million during the same period. Including the money raised by President Biden’s campaign, Harris has raised $3.94 million in Utah compared to Trump’s $2.76 million.
This disparity is nothing new for Trump. In 2016 Clinton outraised Trump by more than 66% despite her eventually losing the state on Election Day.
Democrats have consistently bested Republicans in fundraising efforts this election cycle with joint fundraising efforts nationwide nearly doubling Republicans in the past three months. In spite of Democrats financial haul, both The Hill and FiveThirtyEight continue to forecast Republicans retaining control of the House of Representatives.
Despite her fundraising haul, Harris continues to trail Trump in early voting and in battleground states.
