Mitt Romney may have served only one term in the Senate, but his career as a public servant has lasted much longer.
During his farewell address, Romney celebrated his staff as the true heroes of his tenure and warned against politicians who “tear at unity” and against the expansion of national debt.
“Our national credit card is almost maxed out,” Romney warned, citing that without the interest on the debt Social Security payments could be doubled for senior citizens.
Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) praised Romney’s business career including his leadership of the 2002 Winter Olympics and cited Romney’s willingness to compromise to “move the ball forward.”
Also praising his ability to forge compromise were Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ). Collins said Romney “is always focused on getting to ‘yes,’” while Booker called Romney a “Great American Patriot.”
“I think the greatest threat to America is our inability to come together as a country,” Booker said.
Booker has long been an unexpected ally of Romney and praised the former Presidential candidate’s foresight warning against the rise of Russia as a world power, despite being lambasted by Democrats at the time.
“On the bingo cards of American politics, the Governor-of-Massachusetts-Senator-from-Utah combination isn’t known to hit very often,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “But Mitt Romney’s repeated success in public office is a testament to the transcendent appeal of his character…. It wasn’t about what he had left to prove, but what he had left to give.”Romney was both a Republican and an outspoken critic of Donald Trump during his first term as President drawing criticism from media and politicians on both sides of the aisle. Romney twice voted in favor of impeachment of the former President.
