After a series of audits that have resulted in over $50 billion in government savings, DOGE has turned its attention to the famed Fort Knox. Home to an estimated $400 billion in gold reserves Fort Knox is considered one of the most secure facilities in world.
Convention wisdom says Congress has oversight and authority over the Executive agencies including Fort Knox, but according to Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) Fort Knox has repeatedly denied him access without offering any reason.
Fort Knox has also refused access to Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).
Lee is not the first member of Congress to raise concerns over Fort Knox. Senator Rand Paul and former Congressman Ron Paul have both voiced concerns about the gold reserve and demanded audits and transparency from both the US Mint and the Army which manages the site.
DOGE has posed questions regarding both the quantity and purity of the gold stored in the US reserve, while treasury analysts say the value of the US gold reserves has not been recalculated since 1972 when gold was valued at $42 an ounce.
Senator Lee has been a vocal supporter of DOGE and blames both Congressional Democrats and Republicans for the waste and fraud Musk’s taskforce has uncovered.
“The next time you hear House or Senate Republicans complaining about federal funds being used to fund studies on how cocaine-using, gender-non-conforming crayfish perform on a treadmill, ask them how many times they’ve joined nearly all Democrats to pass spending bills that (1) they never had the chance to read, much less debate or amend, and (2) were opposed by most Republicans,” Lee said.
“The easy, routine passage of such bills—without any meaningful opportunity for debate or modification, and supported by just enough Republican votes to ensure passage—all but ensures the perpetuation of excessive, wasteful spending. This is a habit that must come to an end if we’re ever going to get federal spending under control. It’s a habit that can’t be blamed entirely on Democrats.” Lee has been active on social media building support for the REINS Act which would strip legislative and budget power Executive agencies and return it to Congress.
